Recovery Timeline & Self-Care

Recovery depends on injury severity: minor sprains typically improve within 1-2 weeks, moderate injuries may require 3-6 weeks, while fractures can take 6-8 weeks or longer. Follow RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) during initial recovery. Avoid weight-bearing as directed, use prescribed immobilization devices consistently, and attend follow-up appointments. Return if you experience increased pain, numbness, skin color changes, or fever. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my foot is broken or just sprained?

Without X-ray imaging, it's difficult to distinguish between fractures and severe sprains based on symptoms alone. According to orthopedic guidelines, inability to bear weight, severe point tenderness over bone, or visible deformity suggest possible fracture. Our on-site X-ray capabilities allow our medical providers to make an accurate diagnosis during your visit, ensuring you receive appropriate treatment whether it's a sprain, fracture, or other injury.

Do I need an appointment for foot injury evaluation?

No appointment is necessary. We welcome walk-ins daily from 8am to 8pm at both our Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart locations. For foot injuries, we recommend coming in promptly for evaluation, especially if you cannot bear weight or have significant swelling.

Can you treat puncture wounds or foreign objects in the foot?

Yes, we provide wound care including cleaning, foreign body removal when safely possible, and tetanus vaccination if needed. Puncture wounds require careful evaluation as they carry infection risk. We assess depth, check for retained foreign material using X-ray if indicated, and provide appropriate antibiotics when clinically necessary. Deep or contaminated wounds may require referral for specialized care.

What should I do immediately after a foot injury before coming in?

Follow the RICE protocol: Rest the foot and avoid bearing weight, apply Ice for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours, use Compression with an elastic bandage if available (not too tight), and Elevate the foot above heart level. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed on the package. Avoid applying heat, which can increase swelling. Come to urgent care promptly for evaluation, especially if pain is severe or you cannot walk.

Will I need a cast or walking boot?

Treatment depends on your specific diagnosis. Minor sprains may only require an elastic bandage and rest. Moderate sprains often benefit from a walking boot or rigid splint for 2-4 weeks. Fractures typically require immobilization with a cast, boot, or splint, with duration depending on fracture location and severity. Our medical providers will recommend the most appropriate immobilization based on your X-ray findings and clinical examination.

What should I bring to my foot injury visit?

Please bring your photo ID, insurance card if applicable, and a list of current medications including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. If you've had previous foot injuries or surgeries, bring any relevant medical records or imaging results. Wear or bring loose-fitting shoes that can accommodate swelling or a splint, as tight footwear may need to be removed during examination.

When should I go to the emergency room instead of urgent care?

Visit the emergency room for severe injuries including: foot completely unable to move, severe deformity with bone protruding through skin, loss of pulse or sensation in the foot, uncontrolled bleeding, or injury accompanied by other serious trauma. For most foot injuries including suspected fractures, sprains, and minor wounds, urgent care provides appropriate evaluation and treatment with shorter wait times.

Can you refer me to an orthopedic specialist if needed?

Yes, we maintain relationships with orthopedic specialists throughout Palm Beach and Martin Counties. If your injury requires specialized care such as complex fracture management, surgical evaluation, or advanced physical therapy, our medical providers will arrange appropriate referrals and provide all necessary documentation including X-ray images and clinical findings to ensure continuity of care.
