Frequently Asked Questions

Should I go to urgent care or the emergency room for an eye injury?

Visit urgent care for foreign bodies, minor corneal abrasions, chemical splashes (after initial flushing), and non-penetrating injuries. Go to the emergency room immediately for penetrating injuries, severe trauma, sudden vision loss, or injuries involving sharp objects that may have entered the eye.

Can you remove something stuck in my eye?

Yes, we can safely remove most foreign bodies including metal shavings, wood particles, and debris. We use specialized tools and techniques to remove objects while minimizing additional damage to the eye surface.

What is a corneal abrasion and how is it treated?

A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the clear front surface of your eye. We diagnose it using fluorescein dye that makes the scratch visible under special light. Treatment typically includes antibiotic drops to prevent infection, pain medication, and sometimes a protective eye patch. Most heal within 24-48 hours.

I got chemicals in my eye - what should I do?

Immediately flush your eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes, then come to urgent care. We'll continue irrigation if needed, check for damage, and provide appropriate treatment. Chemical injuries require prompt care to prevent serious complications.

Will I need to see an eye specialist after my visit?

For minor injuries, follow-up with an eye specialist may not be necessary. However, we'll refer you to an ophthalmologist for serious injuries, penetrating trauma, significant vision changes, or conditions requiring specialized care.

Can I wear contact lenses after an eye injury?

No, avoid contact lenses until your eye has completely healed and you've been cleared by a healthcare provider. Wearing contacts too soon can delay healing and increase infection risk. We'll provide specific guidance based on your injury.

What should I bring to my visit?

Bring your photo ID, insurance card, list of current medications, and any eyeglasses or contact lens information. If you know what caused the injury (such as a specific chemical), bring that information or the product container if safe to do so.

Do I need an appointment for eye injury care?

No appointment is necessary. We welcome walk-ins daily from 8am to 8pm at both our Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart locations. For severe injuries, call ahead so we can prepare for your arrival.
