Recovery Timeline & Self-Care

Recovery time varies based on the underlying cause. Viral coughs typically improve within 2-3 weeks, while bacterial infections often show improvement within 3-5 days of starting antibiotics. Stay well-hydrated, use a humidifier, avoid irritants like smoke, and get adequate rest. Over-the-counter cough suppressants or expectorants may provide relief as directed. Return for follow-up if symptoms worsen, you develop difficulty breathing, or cough persists beyond 3 weeks. Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a medical provider for a cough?

Seek medical evaluation if your cough lasts more than 3 weeks, produces discolored mucus, is accompanied by fever, causes chest pain, or interferes with sleep and daily activities. Also seek care if you experience shortness of breath, wheezing, or cough up blood. According to the American College of Chest Physicians, persistent cough lasting beyond 8 weeks is considered chronic and requires professional evaluation.

Do I need a chest X-ray for my cough?

Not all coughs require X-rays. Our medical providers will determine if imaging is needed based on your symptoms, physical examination, and medical history. X-rays help identify pneumonia, bronchitis complications, or other lung conditions. We have on-site X-ray capabilities for immediate results when clinically indicated.

Can you treat asthma-related cough?

Yes, we can evaluate and treat asthma symptoms including cough. We perform breathing assessments, may provide nebulizer treatments for immediate relief, and can prescribe appropriate medications. If you have known asthma, bring your current medications and inhaler to your visit.

Will I get antibiotics for my cough?

Antibiotics are prescribed only when bacterial infection is diagnosed or strongly suspected. Many coughs are caused by viral infections that don't respond to antibiotics. Our providers use evidence-based protocols and diagnostic testing to determine if antibiotics are appropriate for your specific condition.

Do I need an appointment?

No appointment is necessary. We welcome walk-ins daily from 8am to 8pm at both our Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart locations. Most patients are evaluated and treated within their visit.

What should I bring to my visit?

Please bring your photo ID, insurance card, a list of current medications (including over-the-counter drugs and supplements), and any inhalers or breathing medications you currently use. This information helps us provide safe, effective treatment.

Should I go to urgent care or the emergency room for a cough?

Visit urgent care for persistent cough, cough with fever, or cough producing mucus. Go to the emergency room if you experience severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, blue lips or face, or coughing up large amounts of blood. These are signs of potentially life-threatening conditions requiring immediate emergency care.

Can you help with cough that's keeping me awake at night?

Yes, nighttime cough significantly impacts quality of life and recovery. We'll identify the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment, which may include prescription cough suppressants, breathing treatments, or medications to address the root condition causing your cough.
