Frequently Asked Questions

Is catheterization painful?

Most patients experience brief discomfort during insertion, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated. We use appropriate lubrication and gentle technique to minimize discomfort. Local anesthetic gel may be used when appropriate.

How long does the catheterization procedure take?

The actual catheter insertion typically takes just a few minutes. Your entire visit including assessment, procedure, and post-procedure instructions usually takes 30-45 minutes.

Will I go home with a catheter in place?

This depends on your specific medical situation. Some patients receive temporary catheterization for immediate relief and the catheter is removed before discharge. Others may need an indwelling catheter for several days or longer, which we'll secure and provide care instructions for.

What are the risks of catheterization?

When performed with proper sterile technique, catheterization is generally safe. Potential risks include urinary tract infection, urethral injury, or discomfort. We minimize these risks through careful technique and appropriate catheter selection.

How do I care for a catheter at home?

We provide detailed written and verbal instructions for catheter care, including how to secure the catheter, empty and clean the drainage bag, maintain hygiene, and recognize signs of problems. We're available for questions during our operating hours.

When should I return for catheter removal?

We'll provide specific instructions based on your situation. Some catheters are removed after a few days, while others may stay in place longer. Never attempt to remove a catheter yourself - return to urgent care or see your primary care provider as directed.

Do I need an appointment for catheterization?

No appointment is necessary. Walk-ins are welcome at both our Palm Beach Gardens and Stuart locations, open daily 8am-8pm. However, calling ahead can help us prepare for your arrival.

What should I bring to my visit?

Please bring your photo ID, insurance card, and a list of current medications. If you've had previous catheterizations or urinary issues, any relevant medical records would be helpful.
